After hearing so much about it from my friends and from the media itself, I decided to go and watch the movie, 'No One Killed Jessica' with a friend of mine, this Monday. It was really good. The first Bollywood movie that I could put in my list of favourite movies.
I wouldn't go into too much detail but basically the story is based on a real life incident that took place in Delhi in 1999. A model called Jessica Lall, tending a bar, was shot dead by the son of an eminent bureaucrat for merely refusing a drink after closing hours. Even with 300 witnesses to this crime, the murderer escaped imprisonment because of his father's money and power. The Times of India made the headline 'No One Killed Jessica' after the accused was acquitted in 2006; hence, the title.
The media, Tehelka and Star News to be precise, then investigated into the matter and unraveled the wrong and injustice that was showered upon Jessica and her family. The Jessica Lall case showcased the rot and foulness involved in the Indian democracy, police and judiciary. I don't want to dig deeper into this matter because it is a very sensitive subject. However, I will mention that this case saw the rise of public interest in civil society and how the people came together in order to stand up against the injustice done to Jessica. It wasn't just a battle for Jessica Lall but thousands of others who suffered the same fate of justice being denied to them. They even had a candle light memorial march in her name. I found this very moving and it even had me cry a little. My emotions are such suckers for movies like this.
I must also add that Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan did a great job at acting out their parts. The soundtrack was awesome too.
I guess I got carried away with reviewing the movie! Anyway, this is what I had worn to the movie. And silly me left my lovely black gloves in the hall and forgot to collect them.
